Boston: Traffic Advisory for January 2, 2026

Rezul News/10724054
~ Boston, MA - As the city prepares for the inauguration of its new mayor, Kim Janey, on Monday, January 5, 2026, residents and visitors are encouraged to utilize alternative modes of transportation to attend the various events taking place. The city is promoting walking, biking, and public transit as the preferred methods of travel.

For those looking to bike around the city, information on Bluebikes, the regional bike share service, can be found on their website. Additionally, information on the MBTA can be found online. The MBTA advises riders to purchase a round-trip ticket instead of a one-way ticket for a faster return trip.

One of the main events for Mayor Janey's inauguration will be a reception at the Boston Public Library Main Branch in Back Bay. Due to logistical and public safety reasons, certain temporary parking restrictions will be in place throughout Monday on Blagden Street from Dartmouth Street to Exeter Street; Boylston Street from Exeter Street to Dartmouth Street (excluding any handicap parking); and Exeter Street on the west side (odd side) from Boylston Street to Blagden Street.

In Fenway, where the Inauguration Ceremony will take place at Boston Symphony Hall, similar parking restrictions will be in effect. These include Huntington Avenue on the north side (odd side) from Massachusetts Avenue to Gainsborough Street; Huntington Avenue on the south side (even side) from Gainsborough Street to Massachusetts Avenue (including all parking meter poles and loading zones); Massachusetts Avenue on the west side (odd side) from Haviland Street to Westland Avenue; St Botolph Street on the north side (odd side) opposite Matthews Arena; St Stephen Street on the south side (even side) from Massachusetts Avenue to Gainsborough Street; and Gainsborough Street on both sides (parking meters only) from Huntington Avenue to St Stephen Street. The northeast side (odd side) from the MBTA property for the Orange Line to St. Botolph Street will also be affected.

In Roslindale, the Canterbury Street Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic starting on Friday, September 12 at 9:00 p.m. This closure is due to findings from a recent bridge inspection and will remain in effect until further notice. Pedestrian access will still be available, but drivers are advised to follow the detour signage in place. The primary detour route will utilize Hyde Park Avenue, Cummins Highway, Rowe Street, Brown Avenue, and Seymour Street. Drivers should expect delays and use caution while traveling through the affected areas.

The city of Boston is excited to welcome its new mayor and encourages everyone attending these events to consider alternative modes of transportation such as walking, biking, or taking public transit. By doing so, we can all contribute to a safer and more sustainable city.
