Boston: National Recovery Month
Rezul News/10744124
~ During this week's Council meeting, the Boston City Council adopted a resolution recognizing September 2026 as National Recovery Month. The resolution aims to raise awareness of substance abuse prevention and treatment and celebrate the progress made by those in recovery.
Since 1989, September has been designated as National Recovery Month by recovery organizations. This month serves as an opportunity to celebrate the positive steps taken by individuals in recovery and promote evidence-based methods of substance abuse prevention and treatment.
The Council's resolution acknowledges the millions of Americans who have transformed their lives through recovery treatment. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing their progress and encouraging more individuals to take steps towards recovery.

The resolution also sheds light on the progress and challenges faced by the city of Boston. According to data from the Boston Public Health Commission, there has been a 29 percent decline in opioid-related deaths in 2025. However, certain neighborhoods such as Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan, and the South End continue to experience disproportionately higher age-adjusted opioid-related death rates compared to the rest of the city between 2022 and 2025.
In light of these statistics, the Council urges residents and institutions across Boston to join in celebrating those making strides towards recovery. It also calls for increased awareness of available resources for substance abuse prevention and recovery. As National Recovery Month approaches, let us recognize and support those on their journey towards a healthier life.
