Boston: Memorial Hall Study Report

~ Charlestown's Memorial Hall has stood as a symbol of history and community for over two centuries. Originally built in 1791 as a residence for prominent Boston families, the building has since undergone a transformation that has solidified its place in the town's legacy.

Constructed as a double pile, two-story mansion, Memorial Hall was home to notable figures such as Samuel Dexter, who served as Secretary of War and of the Treasury under President John Adams. However, in 1888, the building underwent an extensive rehabilitation that would change its purpose and significance forever.

The rehabilitation added a two-story extension on the southeast elevation, updated the floor plan and finishes, and raised the roof to create space for a second-floor meeting hall. This transformation turned Memorial Hall into the home of Abraham Lincoln Post 11 of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), an organization founded by Civil War veterans. Since then, it has remained in continuous use as a veterans' hall for over 130 years.

Not only does Memorial Hall hold historic value for its original eighteenth-century architecture, but it also serves as an example of nineteenth-century adaptive reuse. The building's Federal style architecture is still evident today, along with Second Empire style modifications that make it a unique architectural hybrid in Charlestown.

In light of its historical and architectural significance, there are efforts to designate Memorial Hall as a landmark. If designated, guidelines outlined in the study report will be used to review any proposed changes to the property. This is to ensure that the building's historic integrity and setting are preserved.

The public is invited to provide feedback on this potential landmark designation through written submissions or by attending a public hearing held by the Boston Landmarks Commission on April 14th, 2026. The hearing notice will be posted on their website at least ten days prior to the meeting date. With its rich history and unique architecture, Memorial Hall continues to hold great importance to the residents of Charlestown and is a testament to the town's enduring legacy.
