Boston: Italian American Heritage Month
Rezul News/10747261
~ Boston City Council Recognizes Italian American Heritage Month
The Boston City Council has recognized October 2026 as Italian American Heritage Month, honoring the contributions of Italian immigrants and Italian Americans to the city.
The resolution highlights the history of Italian immigration to Boston, where thousands of people from regions including Liguria, Campania, Abruzzo, Sicily and Lazio settled beginning in the 1860s. Italian American communities took root in neighborhoods such as the North End, East Boston, Brighton, Hyde Park and South Boston.
Italian Americans have helped shape Boston's neighborhoods, businesses, labor movement, arts, public institutions and civic life, the resolution states. It also acknowledges the discrimination, economic hardship and barriers faced by generations of immigrants and their descendants.

Among those recognized for public service is former Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Boston's longest-serving mayor and the grandson of Italian immigrants.
The resolution describes the city's Italian American community as continuing to enrich Boston through traditions of family, faith, food, music, art, mutual aid and community service. It frames the month as an opportunity to honor earlier generations' sacrifices and celebrate those carrying their legacy forward.
More than 26 million Americans trace their heritage to Italy. Congress first recognized Italian American Heritage Month in October 1989, and Massachusetts formally designated October as the observance in 1998.
As part of the recognition, the Council requested that the Property Management Department raise the Italian flag on the third flagpole at Boston City Hall Plaza on Oct. 6, 2026.
