Boston: Go Red for Women's Heart Health

~ In an effort to raise awareness about women's heart health and the importance of prevention, education, and early recognition, the Council has officially recognized National Wear Red Day. This annual event, observed on the first Friday in February, encourages individuals, organizations, and City departments to participate by wearing red and promoting awareness about heart disease and stroke in women.

The resolution was offered by Councilor Murphy and highlights the fact that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. It accounts for approximately one in every five female deaths. The resolution also emphasizes the need to address disparities in care, particularly for women of color.

According to the resolution, many women do not recognize heart disease as their greatest health risk. Additionally, symptoms of heart attack and stroke in women can differ from those in men, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. By participating in National Wear Red Day, residents can help spread awareness about these differences and empower individuals, families, and communities to prioritize prevention and recognize warning signs.

The Council also recognized that women's heart health is influenced by various factors such as stress, caregiving responsibilities, mental and emotional well-being, access to preventive care, and social and economic conditions. By coming together on National Wear Red Day, residents can show their support for healthier outcomes for all women.
