~ ### Boston Council declares Sept. 25 "9 to 5 Day" in honor of Dolly Parton

The Boston City Council has adopted a resolution honoring Dolly Parton and designating Sept. 25, 2026, as "9 to 5 Day" in the city. The recognition also celebrates Boston residents who work 9 to 5 or support the city.

Parton, who died Aug. 25, was an internationally renowned singer, songwriter, actor, businesswoman and philanthropist whose career spanned more than six decades. Raised in rural East Tennessee, she began performing as a child and became a major figure in American music and popular culture.

The resolution highlights Parton's connection to Boston through her 1980 film and hit song "9 to 5." The song was inspired by a grassroots labor movement among Boston female office workers in the 1970s and became an anthem for workers seeking dignity and fairness on the job.

Council members also recognized Parton's philanthropic work, including the Dollywood Foundation and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, which has distributed millions of books to children worldwide. The resolution noted her advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community and her message of acceptance and kindness.

After Parton's death, lawmakers in Tennessee introduced legislation to establish Sept. 25 as "9 to 5 Day." Massachusetts State Sen. Julian Cyr and state Rep. Sam Montaño also introduced legislation seeking the designation statewide.

Boston joins communities across Massachusetts and the country in recognizing Parton's music, philanthropy and lasting influence.
