~ During this week's Council meeting, the City of Boston took a significant step in honoring an important figure in Massachusetts history. The Council adopted a resolution declaring August 22 as Elizabeth Freeman Day and encouraging residents to reflect upon her enduring legacy.
Elizabeth Freeman, also known as "Mum Bett," was born into slavery and later enslaved in the household of Colonel John Ashley in Sheffield, Massachusetts. However, she was determined to fight for her freedom and challenge the legality of her enslavement.
Inspired by the principles of equality and justice outlined in the Massachusetts Constitution of 1780, Freeman brought suit for her freedom alongside another enslaved person named Brom. In 1781, their case, known as Brom and Bett v. Ashley, resulted in a judgment recognizing Freeman's legal right to liberty.

This landmark decision made Freeman one of the first enslaved individuals in Massachusetts to successfully sue for freedom under the Commonwealth's new Constitution. Her courageous pursuit of freedom not only secured her own liberty but also contributed to a series of legal decisions that ultimately helped establish that slavery was incompatible with the state's Constitution.
The Council's resolution not only recognizes Freeman's bravery and determination but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and justice.
