Boston: Council Calls for Restoration of Temporary Protected Status
Rezul News/10727036
~ In a recent press release, the Council strongly condemned the federal decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti. The Council, led by Councilor Louijeune, expressed concern over the serious risks this action poses to Haitian residents who have made Boston their home.
The resolution, which was offered by Councilor Louijeune, calls on federal officials to reverse the decision and restore TPS protections for Haiti. It also emphasizes the city's ongoing commitment to immigrant communities and human rights.
TPS is a humanitarian program that provides protection for individuals who are unable to safely return to their home countries due to natural disasters, armed conflict, or other extraordinary conditions. Haiti was first designated for TPS following the devastating 2010 earthquake and has since been redesignated due to ongoing instability and recurring disasters.

The termination of Haiti's TPS designation puts the safety, employment, and legal status of hundreds of thousands of Haitian nationals nationwide at risk, including thousands in Boston.
The resolution also highlights the vibrant Haitian community in Boston and their significant contributions to the city's cultural, civic, and economic life. Many TPS holders have built deep roots in the city and their families, employers, schools, and community institutions are all threatened by the termination of their protections.
Councilor Louijeune and the Council stressed that this federal decision does not reflect the current realities in Haiti. The country continues to face widespread violence, displacement, political turmoil, and institutional instability that endanger its residents' lives.
The Council urges both the Administration and Congress to reverse this termination and work with local, state, and federal partners to ensure safety, stability, and dignity for all affected families. They also reaffirmed their solidarity with Boston's Haitian community and their commitment to protecting immigrant communities and upholding human rights.
