Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission Seeks Student Voices for 2026 Art & Essay Contest

~ Bloomington, IN- The Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission is calling all local students in grades K-6 to participate in their annual Youth Art & Essay Contest. This year's theme is "Where do you see people caring for each other in our community?" and aims to encourage students to reflect on the Bloomington and Monroe County community and how residents of different backgrounds support one another.

The submission deadline for the contest is Friday, March 13, 2026. Students can submit either artwork or a short essay, with a maximum length of one page. Digital submissions can be made through the website bton.in/HRC2026, while physical copies can be dropped off at Bloomington City Hall. Teachers who wish to submit work for an entire class can email entries to [email protected] All submissions must include the student's name, grade, school, and contact information for a parent, guardian, or teacher.

The winners of the contest will be announced in April 2026 and will receive passes to the WonderLab Museum. In previous years, winners have impressed with their creativity, research skills, and passion for their chosen topic. Additionally, all participants are invited to have their work displayed at City Hall during the month of April.

The Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission is responsible for enforcing the Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Ordinance and educating community members about their rights and responsibilities under various civil rights laws.
