Bloomington: Mayor Thomson Issues Statement on Convention Center Hotel and Seminary Pointe
Rezul News/10738314
~ Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson has released a statement regarding the ongoing discussions surrounding the convention center hotel, a potential land exchange involving College Square, and the future of Seminary Pointe. The mayor emphasized that the city is committed to pursuing responsible development while also working to preserve affordable housing.
According to Mayor Thomson, it is possible for Bloomington to find a suitable location for the convention center hotel while also prioritizing affordable housing. These goals are not mutually exclusive and can be achieved through collaboration with willing partners and a transparent public process.
The mayor continues to believe that College Square is an ideal location for the convention center hotel. In order to reach a reasonable agreement regarding the property, the Bloomington Redevelopment Commission (RDC) has issued a request for proposals. Any offers must be submitted through this process, and Mayor Thomson hopes that the Capital Improvement Board or its hotel development partner will bring forward a proposal.
This proposal could potentially include monetary compensation or another form of value, such as a land exchange. However, it is ultimately up to the RDC to evaluate any proposal and determine if it is in the best interest of the community.

While discussions about College Square continue, Mayor Thomson's team is also deeply concerned about the potential loss of 29 affordable housing units at Seminary Pointe. The mayor wants to make it clear that a potential land exchange involving College Square alone will not serve as a preservation strategy for Seminary Pointe. In order to preserve these units, a qualified developer or property owner would need to acquire or retain the property and maintain all 29 units at affordable rents. The city would prioritize potential incentives for such partners or developers who are able to preserve or replace these units at another suitable location.
Preserving existing affordable housing while creating more of it is a top priority for Mayor Thomson's administration. This work is being advanced through various means such as direct city investment and partnerships with organizations and developers dedicated to affordable housing.
The mayor expressed gratitude towards Homes for All for their advocacy and dedication to this issue. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Monroe County Apartment Association, who have reached out directly to Seminary Pointe residents and offered assistance in finding available apartments in a similar price range. So far, one resident has secured housing through their services, and the association's assistance remains available to any other residents who may need it.
Mayor Thomson reassured the community that his administration will continue to work collaboratively and practically towards moving Bloomington forward while also protecting its current residents.
