Bloomington: City Solar Grant Program Covers Full Installation Cost for Income-Qualified Homeowners

For income ~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington has recently announced the launch of its Solar Grants for Income-Qualified Homeowners Program. This program aims to assist eligible residents in overcoming the upfront cost of installing solar panels and reducing long-term household energy expenses.

According to Shawn Miya, Assistant Director of Sustainability for the City of Bloomington, the program addresses one of the biggest barriers to residential solar - the upfront cost. "Solar energy shouldn't be a benefit available only to households that can afford the investment," said Miya. "This program helps remove that barrier and gives income-qualified homeowners an opportunity to benefit from renewable energy."

The Solar Grants for Income-Qualified Homeowners Program provides 100% grant funding for a 5-kilowatt solar system for homeowners whose total household income is less than 80% Area Median Income as determined by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. This grant covers the full cost of a 5-kilowatt installation, including solar panels, inverters, equipment, and labor.

Not only does this program help homeowners generate electricity from renewable sources, but it also aligns with several City goals such as increasing renewable energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting housing affordability.

"This program is designed to address an important equity consideration in the transition to clean energy," said Miya. "Residents who face financial barriers should not be left behind as Bloomington moves towards a more sustainable future."

The solar systems installed through this program are expected to provide long-term benefits. The City's selected vendor, MPI Solar, offers a minimum 25-year warranty for power production and a five-year workmanship warranty on their solar modules.

To be eligible for this program, homeowners must own and occupy a qualifying single-family home within Bloomington city limits with a structurally sound roof that does not require repair or replacement before installation.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until program funding has been allocated. Interested homeowners must first undergo an eligibility check before completing the application process, which includes providing information about household energy use and installation logistics.
