Bloomington: City Announces Increased Traffic Enforcement Ahead of MCCSC School Year

~ As the new school year begins for the Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) on Wednesday, Aug. 5, the Bloomington Police Department (BPD) has launched a traffic safety blitz to ensure the safety of drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and students.

The BPD has increased traffic enforcement throughout the city, particularly in areas that have been identified through crash data and resident complaints as being unsafe for drivers. Working closely with data analysts, the department has pinpointed intersections and corridors with high crash activity and recurring concerns about traffic violations.

Enforcement efforts will be concentrated in these areas with documented crash patterns, as well as those with school-year traffic concerns and repeated resident complaints. Drivers are advised to exercise extra caution near schools, crosswalks, bus stops, bike lanes, and areas with heavy pedestrian activity.

During this safety blitz, officers will be taking a zero-tolerance approach towards violations commonly reported by residents. These include speeding, disregarding stop signs and traffic signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, turning right on red where prohibited, using a cell phone while driving, and other unsafe driving behaviors that put pedestrians, bicyclists, students, and motorists at risk.

Those who are stopped for these violations can expect enforcement action to be taken against them in the form of citations. This initiative comes at a crucial time as Bloomington prepares for increased school-year traffic with school buses back on the roads along with student pedestrians and bicyclists. Families returning to town for the start of Indiana University's fall semester will also add to the traffic flow.

Captain Ryan Pedigo of the Bloomington Police Department stated that their goal is simple: to make Bloomington's roadways safer for everyone who uses them. With children heading back to school and more pedestrians and bicyclists moving through the city, drivers are urged to slow down, pay attention to posted signs and signals, yield to pedestrians, and keep their phones put away while driving.
