He is believed to be the first foreign traveller granted permission to visit the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Pyramids of Meröe since the outbreak of Sudan's civil war in April 2023.
Located in the Nubian Desert, the Pyramids of Meröe are among Africa's most remarkable ancient sites, representing the legacy of the Kingdom of Kush and standing as a testament to Sudan's deep and often overlooked history.
Access to the site has been severely restricted since the conflict began, making Darren's visit particularly rare.
"Spending Christmas Day at Meröe was one of the most humbling and meaningful experiences of my life," said Darren.
Sudan has an incredibly rich cultural heritage, and it was a privilege to witness it firsthand during such a challenging period for the country.
I hope sharing this experience helps shine a light on Sudan beyond the headlines."
Darren McLean is the creator of Taste2Travel (www.taste2travel.com), a travel platform dedicated to exploring global destinations, with an emphasis on remote and challenging destinations.
