Arizona: 74 DAYS LATER: Republican Legislators Block Public School Funding to Give Themselves Pay Hike
Rezul News/10731408
Phoenix, AZ ~ Phoenix, AZ - As the budget negotiations continue in Arizona, Governor Katie Hobbs' balanced executive budget proposal has been in the spotlight for 74 days. The proposal aims to lower costs, invest over $1 billion in public education, and cut taxes for the middle class while ending tax breaks for data centers.
However, instead of engaging in serious discussions about the budget, Legislative Republicans have been playing political games. Today, they blocked an amendment to SCR 1012 that would have put funding for Arizona public schools on the November ballot. In contrast, they voted to advance a proposal that would create a commission to raise legislator pay.
Christian Slater, communications director for Governor Hobbs, expressed disappointment at this move by Republican legislators. "It's shameful that they are more focused on their own bank accounts than the future of Arizona students and teachers," he said. "While Governor Hobbs and House Democrats are fighting for our public schools and teachers, legislative Republicans are only concerned about themselves."

This latest obstruction of public education funding comes after Jake Hoffman, an indicted fake elector, tweeted about Republicans surrendering on Prop 123. He stated that it would effectively support Governor Hobbs' reelection campaign. Republican budget negotiators have since declared that there is no way forward for a Prop 123 deal and have refused to release their own budget proposal.
The actions of Legislative Republicans have been met with criticism from many who believe they are putting their own interests above those of Arizona's students and teachers. The call for them to negotiate in good faith and prioritize funding for public education continues as the budget discussions continue.
