Yacht Captain Transforms Life Of Adventure Into A Children's Series Celebrating Courage & Kindness

RALEIGH, N.C. - Rezul -- A life shaped by boats, oceans and adventure has inspired a growing children's book series with a simple mission: spark young imaginations while celebrating adventure, courage and kindness.

Author, songwriter, and yacht captain Blaine Parks created Captain Skully and The Skullywags, a band of unlikely pirates whose adventures blend classic swashbuckling fun with lessons about friendship, courage, kindness,  and helping others.

The concept grew from Parks' unconventional life. After leaving the corporate world, he spent years living and cruising aboard a sailboat along the East Coast, through the Florida Keys and across the Bahamas. His work as a yacht captain still takes him from port to port around the world.

In time, those experiences became stories and eventually made their way onto the page thru magazine and newsletter articles and, now, through Captain Skully and The Skullywags adventure coloring books.

"First and foremost, I wanted to create something fun for kids," Parks said. "But I also wanted Captain Skully and his crew to stand for something. If children finish an adventure excited about pirates and treasure, and thinking a little more about courage, friendship, or kindness—we've accomplished something worthwhile."

Captain Skully and his young Skullywag crew - Pearl, Finn, and Adley - sail through a world of pirate ships, mysterious islands, buried treasure, and unexpected friends.

What started as a book series has expanded into the broader Captain Skully Adventure Books™ collection, which includes coloring and activity experiences, illustrated stories, and other creative projects featuring the characters.

The Captain Skully world now extends beyond print with the Official Captain Skully and The Skullywags Soundtrack, a seven-song collection inspired by the characters and their adventures. The music expands the stories and offers children another way to join the fun: reading the adventures, coloring the characters, and singing along with the crew.

For Parks—a longtime singer-songwriter as well as a captain and author—adding music was a natural extension of the stories.

"Music has always been part of my life, just like boats and the ocean," Parks said. "Captain Skully let me bring those worlds together. I love that children can read one of our books, then hear songs inspired by the same characters and adventures."

Three words anchor the entire project:

Adventure. Courage. Kindness.

The series is already reaching readers beyond the United States, showing that pirate adventures, and the values they carry, can cross borders.

"The larger goal is to give parents, grandparents, teachers, and organizations something entertaining that also shares a positive message. Children don't need another lecture about being good people. Sometimes they need a great adventure with characters who show them what that looks like."
