April 7, 2026 ~ Spokane Fire Department Responds to Two House Fires in Less Than 24 Hours
At approximately 4:38 p.m. yesterday, firefighters were dispatched to 5324 North Lacey St. after receiving reports of a fire on a home's front porch. According to Justin de Ruyter, Spokane Fire PIO, the fire was caused by discarded cigarettes in potting soil in a container.
Truck 2 from the Bemiss neighborhood arrived within four minutes and found the porch fully engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading into the living quarters. Firefighters quickly searched the interior and extinguished the blaze. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
However, the building, which was a converted duplex, sustained heavy smoke damage and some fire damage throughout both living quarters. As a result, six adults were displaced and the Red Cross was contacted to assist them.
In another incident at 6:40 a.m. today, firefighters were dispatched to a home just east of Jack & Dan's Bar & Grill following reports of a house fire. Engine and Truck 2 from the Bemiss neighborhood arrived within four minutes and encountered heavy fire at the rear of 918 East Sharp Ave, which was spreading to the neighboring home to the east.

A second-alarm assignment was immediately requested as firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the exterior flames while additional crews entered the home to search for occupants. As they entered through the front door, they found that one occupant had already escaped through a first-floor window due to heavy smoke inside.
It took approximately 30 minutes for firefighters to bring the fire under control. The originating home sustained heavy damage while the neighboring home suffered exterior damage. Similar to the previous incident, no injuries were reported but five adults were displaced and received assistance from Red Cross.
The cause of this second fire is still under investigation but it has been determined that it started on the back porch. The Spokane Fire Department has released two images related to these incidents, which can be found on their website.
These two house fires serve as a reminder for everyone to be cautious and responsible when it comes to fire safety. The Spokane Fire Department urges the public to properly dispose of cigarettes and other flammable materials to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
