The City of Boston and Partners Celebrate Start of Construction on Marzuq Muhammad Plaza II in Grove Hall

~ Boston, MA - The City of Boston, in partnership with MTK Development and community members, celebrated the groundbreaking of Marzuq Muhammad Plaza II on Blue Hill Avenue in Grove Hall. This new mixed-use development will feature 18 affordable homeownership opportunities, as well as community and retail space and public green space.

The project, developed by MTK Development, is named in honor of the late Marzuq Muhammad, a respected community leader and developer who dedicated his work to empowering residents through opportunity, inclusion, and neighborhood investment. Chief of Housing Sheila A. Dillon expressed her excitement for the project, stating that it embodies the city's goal of community-centered development.

The four-story building will include 3,272 square feet of ground-floor retail and community space, 18 affordable homeownership units ranging from one to three bedrooms, and parking for up to eight vehicles. These homes will be affordable for households earning between 80 and 100 percent of the Area Median Income. The development also includes outdoor green space for residents and neighbors to gather and connect.

She stated that these new homes will provide all the benefits of homeownership to their future buyers while helping to transform Grove Hall into a vibrant neighborhood. MassHousing is proud to partner with MTK Development and the City of Boston on this project that honors Marzuq Muhammad's legacy.

Marzuq Muhammad was a commercial real estate professional, civic leader, and advocate for equity in Roxbury and across Boston. He was involved with various organizations such as the Roxbury Strategic Oversight Committee and founded programs like Daddy and Me Literacy Program to support fathers of color. His dedication to uplifting families in his community left a lasting legacy that continues through Marzuq Muhammad Plaza II.

Funding for this project was made possible by the City of Boston's Mayor's Office of Housing and Neighborhood Housing Trust, as well as MassHousing's Commonwealth Builder Program and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities.

Under Mayor Michelle Wu's leadership, Boston has made significant progress in creating and preserving affordable homes for its residents. Since the start of her first term, over 18,000 new homes have been produced or begun construction, including thousands of income-restricted units. The Mayor has also implemented policies to make it easier, faster, and less expensive to build housing across all neighborhoods.

In addition to new housing production, Mayor Wu has directed record levels of investment towards expanding affordable homeownership opportunities and supporting renters and homeowners facing housing instability. Through innovative programs like the Housing Accelerator Fund, Welcome Home Boston, and the Housing with Public Assets initiative, the City is finding new ways to create housing on public land and support residents in building wealth and stability.

Mayor Wu's focus on climate and health has also made Boston a national leader in green and energy-efficient housing. These efforts are helping to make Boston a city where every resident can have a safe, stable, and affordable home while strengthening communities for generations to come.
