Texas Southern University's College of Education Charts Bold Future
Rezul News/10715884
HOUSTON, Sept. 25, 2025 ~ Texas Southern University's College of Education (COE) is taking bold steps to solidify its position as a leader in K-12 education. The university, located in the Secretary Roderick R. Paige Building, has announced a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening partnerships, shaping policy, and promoting innovation.
According to J.W. Crawford III, President of Texas Southern University, these initiatives reflect the university's commitment to preparing exceptional teachers who are equipped to tackle the challenges and opportunities present in today's classrooms. As a Historically Black College/University, Texas Southern also recognizes its responsibility to serve the broader interests of the Houston community.
The initiatives put forth by the COE focus on both practice and policy. One key aspect is strengthening partnerships with school districts, particularly with the Houston Independent School District (HISD). The university also plans to expand relationships with other districts in order to align teacher preparation with the specific needs of urban schools.

In addition, Texas Southern aims to have a greater influence on education policy by increasing its presence in shaping effective policies that will improve outcomes and prepare future K-12 teachers. The university is also exploring the possibility of implementing a lab school or similar model that would provide hands-on training for teaching candidates.
To further support its efforts, Texas Southern will be launching a National Education Council comprised of respected education leaders who will advise and assist in implementing the university's K-12 strategy.
These initiatives demonstrate Texas Southern's commitment to not only being a partner to school districts but also being a thought leader in education innovation. HISD Superintendent Mike Miles emphasized the importance of collaboration between institutions like Texas Southern University: "Partnerships like this are crucial for sustaining progress in our schools. The College of Education at Texas Southern is dedicated to addressing the unique challenges of urban education and preparing teachers who are ready for real-world classrooms."

The university's governing board has also expressed their full support for these initiatives. According to Board of Regents Chairman Brandon L. Simmons, the board unanimously adopted a bold strategic direction for the College of Education during a special-called meeting. He also noted that Texas Southern is well-positioned to become a hub for new and innovative approaches to education, especially with the recent implementation of the Education Savings Account program in Texas.
With these actions, Texas Southern University's College of Education is solidifying its position as a leader in preparing teachers, shaping policy, and advancing urban education not only in Texas but also beyond.
