Tacoma City Council Receives Positive Streets Initiative Update

~ During their Study Session today, the Tacoma City Council was presented with an update on the progress and achievements of the Tacoma Streets Initiative over the past decade. The initiative, which was approved by voters in 2015, aimed to address long-standing street maintenance and repair needs throughout the city. With dedicated funding in place, the program has successfully revitalized residential roads, upgraded key arterials, and implemented important safety improvements that benefit communities across Tacoma.

One of the main focuses of the Streets Initiative has been providing critical infrastructure funding for arterial and residential street reconstruction projects. This has included construction of sidewalks and curbs, as well as accessibility improvements to meet ADA standards. Additionally, traffic safety enhancements have been made to improve pedestrian and driver safety, along with upgrades to traffic signals. Some notable projects funded by the initiative include 18 blocks of permeable pavement in the Larchmont neighborhood, new bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and intersection safety improvements.

Another significant project funded by the Streets Initiative is the transformation of Fawcett Avenue into a multi-modal route. Over 20 blocks of new pavement have replaced worn street surfaces in the historic Brewery District, accompanied by new wide sidewalks lining them. Furthermore, access upgrades have been made to South 56th Street with nearly four arterial lane miles paved, safety improvements at four major intersections, and safer access points to the Water Ditch Trail. This trail will connect South Tacoma to downtown and other multi-modal routes.

In addition to supporting local transportation projects, Streets Initiative funding has also allowed the City of Tacoma to compete for state and federal grants. By providing reliable matching dollars, Tacoma has been able to secure significantly more funding for major capital improvements. In fact, for every one dollar invested by Tacoma taxpayers through this initiative, about three dollars have been brought in through grants.

Looking towards future transportation needs in Tacoma, the City has prepared a new proposal called Connect Tacoma: Safe Streets and Sidewalks levy. This proposal is scheduled for voter consideration in the August 2026 election and would provide a 10-year funding plan to upgrade arterials, neighborhood streets, and sidewalks. The goal of this initiative is to improve connectivity for all types of travel.
