Springfield offers recycling options for holiday lights and trees
Rezul News/10723769
~ As the holiday season comes to an end, Springfield Environmental Services is reminding residents of the City's seasonal recycling opportunities. The department is urging the community to properly dispose of string lights, power cords, and live Christmas trees.
According to Ashley Krug, Environmental Services Market Development Coordinator, the City has been accepting string lights and power cords at all three drop-off recycling centers since November 1. These centers include the Franklin Avenue Recycling Center at 731 N. Franklin Ave, Lone-Pine Recycling Center at 3020 S. Lone Pine Ave, and the Yardwaste Recycling Center at 3790 S Farm Rd 119 in Brookline, MO. The program will continue until January 10.
Krug emphasizes that all types of string lights and power cords are accepted in any condition. This initiative aims to divert thousands of pounds of non-recyclable materials from ending up in landfills.
"If your lights no longer work, recycling them is the best option," says Krug.

In addition to string lights and power cords, residents can also dispose of their live Christmas trees for free at the Yardwaste Recycling Center until January 10. However, these trees must be free of ornaments, lights, and decorations. The collected trees will be recycled into mulch that will be available for purchase at the center.
For those with artificial Christmas trees and decorations in good condition, there are donation options available through various area organizations. A list of these options can be found on the City's Waste Wizard tool.
Krug also reminds residents to be mindful of other commonly discarded holiday items such as cardboard packaging, wrapping materials, clothing and toys, and food waste. She encourages everyone to use the Waste Wizard tool to find the best disposal method for these items.
"Springfield offers recycling or donation options for all these materials," says Krug. "The Waste Wizard is a great tool for finding the best disposal method."
The City's efforts to promote proper recycling and disposal during the holiday season have been successful in keeping the community clean and environmentally friendly. Residents are urged to take advantage of these opportunities and do their part in keeping Springfield green.
