Springfield: Memorial service to honor officers fallen in the line of duty

Springfield, Mo. ~ Journalist: On May 22, peace officers from various parts of southwest Missouri will gather at Life360 Chesterfield to pay tribute to the 165 law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty in the past year. The event, which will take place from 10:30-11:30 a.m., is open to the public and free of charge.

Governor Mike Kehoe will be the featured speaker at the event, which is known as Missouri Peace Officers Memorial Day. This day is dedicated to honoring local, state, and federal peace officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice or have been disabled while serving their communities. The national Memorial Day falls on May 15, and Police Week is observed during the calendar week in which it falls.

The holiday was established on October 1, 1961, when Congress requested that the president designate May 15 as a day to honor peace officers. It was officially signed into law by President John F. Kennedy on October 1, 1962. This annual event serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of those who put their lives on the line to protect and serve their communities.
