Springfield: City Council to consider temporary pause on data center applications
Rezul News/10738991
~ At their upcoming meeting on June 22, the Springfield City Council will discuss a proposal to implement an administrative delay on potential data center development. The measure, put forth by City staff, would last for 120 days and aims to facilitate a thorough public dialogue and the creation of a public-interest evaluation framework.
If approved, this temporary pause would provide City staff with ample time to evaluate the city's current regulations, conduct technical analysis, gather input from the public, and draft recommendations. According to City Manager David Cameron, establishing a policy framework before evaluating specific projects is a crucial step for the community.
Cameron stated, "A review would give Springfield the opportunity to better understand data center development, learn from the experiences of other markets, and ensure we are best prepared for the future."

During this review period, City staff will assess various factors such as land use compatibility, potential impacts on utilities such as electricity and water usage, as well as noise and air pollution. These considerations will be balanced with an analysis of potential benefits and economic impact.
To gather community input, the City plans to host public open houses and other engagement opportunities. Any findings and recommendations will then be presented through public processes for consideration by the Planning & Zoning Commission and City Council.
The proposed review period aims to equip Springfield with all necessary information, policies, and community input to thoughtfully evaluate future data center development opportunities while safeguarding the long-term interests of residents and utility customers.
