December 9, 2025 ~ Spokane, WA- On December 9, 2025, a commercial building on East Holyoke Avenue caught fire, causing significant damage to multiple businesses housed inside. The incident was reported by several callers who noticed heavy black smoke coming from the building. Firefighters from Spokane County Fire District 9 were immediately dispatched to the scene to assist.

According to Justin de Ruyter, the Spokane Fire PIO, Engine 15 from the Hillyard neighborhood arrived at the scene within four minutes of receiving the call. Upon arrival, they found a 50' x 200' metal-clad structure with heavy fire coming from one of the businesses inside. The firefighters quickly took action and deployed a 2½-inch attack line to control the fire. Additional hose lines were also used by responding engine companies.

The fire had spread into a common attic space shared by three neighboring businesses in addition to the one where it originated. This caused significant smoke and water damage to all four businesses. The remaining four businesses in the building only sustained light smoke damage and will remain operational.
