Spokane: New Street Outreach Team Close 96 Encampments in First 10 Days
Rezul News/10717903
~ Spokane, WA - In a joint effort between the City of Spokane and Catholic Charities of Eastern Washington, new street outreach teams have been launched to address the issue of homelessness in the city. Led by Erin Hut, Communications Director for the city, these teams have already made significant progress within their first week and a half of operation.
According to Hut, the outreach teams have visited all sites related to active cases within just 12 days. While many of these sites were found to be unoccupied, the teams were able to clear 96 encampments. The majority of individuals encountered by the teams accepted connections to behavioral health or housing services, including the navigation center.
Mayor Brown expressed his satisfaction with the early success of these outreach teams, stating that they are an essential part of the city's plan to address homelessness. He also emphasized the importance of partnerships in creating sustainable change and highlighted the need for improved coordination and communication between various service providers and law enforcement.

Jonathan Mallahan, President of Catholic Charities Housing Ventures, also shared his optimism about the progress made by these outreach teams. He stated that their efforts have resulted in fewer people being forced to sleep and exist outdoors.
The coordinated street outreach teams are located in all four precincts of the Spokane Police Department, including downtown. In addition, next week Spokane 311 will launch a new outreach reporting feature. This will allow members of the public who see individuals in need of assistance to report it through dialing 311 or visiting www.spokane311.org. This will enable prompt dispatching of the outreach teams in near real-time.
The City of Spokane and Catholic Charities are committed to addressing homelessness and providing support for those in need through these new street outreach teams. With their continued efforts and partnerships with other organizations, they hope to make a positive impact on their community.
