Spokane: New Automated Traffic Safety Cameras Installed at Intersection of Mission and Greene

Rezul News/10721110
~ Spokane, WA- In an effort to improve traffic safety, Mayor Lisa Brown has announced the activation of new photo red traffic safety cameras at the intersection of E Mission Ave and N Greene St. This decision was made after careful consideration by the Spokane Police Department, who identified this intersection as a high-risk area for accidents.

According to Erin Hut, Communications Director for the city, the Mission and Greene intersection has been the site of 18 crashes since 2023. This alarming statistic prompted the selection of this location for the installation of traffic safety cameras.

To give drivers time to adjust to this new enforcement measure, a 30-day grace period will begin on Monday, November 24. During this time, violators will receive warnings instead of fines. However, after the grace period ends, those caught running a red light at this intersection will be charged with a $145 infraction.

Jon Snyder, Director of Transportation and Sustainability for Spokane, emphasized the importance of these cameras in promoting safer driving habits. "Over the past few years, Spokane has seen an unacceptable increase in traffic collisions. Any injury or death on our roads is one too many," he stated. "These cameras are a great tool to remind drivers to slow down and ultimately reduce crashes."

The Spokane Police Department also expressed their support for this initiative. Lieutenant Benjamin Maplethorpe stated that intersections with red light violation cameras have seen a decrease in collisions and dangerous driving behaviors. "Safer driving means fewer collisions and safer streets for everyone," he said.

In addition to the Mission and Greene intersection, more traffic safety cameras will soon be deployed near Shadle Park High School, Shaw Middle School, and at the intersection of N Division St and E Magnesium Rd. These measures are part of Mayor Brown's comprehensive plan to improve traffic safety in Spokane.

With these new photo red traffic safety cameras in place, it is hoped that drivers will become more aware of their actions on the road and ultimately make Spokane's streets safer for everyone.
