Spokane: Construction Project Changes

~ Spokane City residents can expect significant traffic delays on North Ash Street between Indiana Avenue and Maxwell Avenue starting Monday, September 22. The City's stormwater system work has been postponed, causing lane reductions and congestion for drivers traveling southbound on N. Ash St.

Originally scheduled to begin on September 9, the Maxwell Avenue Bike and Pedestrian Safety Upgrades project will now take place from September 22 to September 24. During this time, the southbound lanes on Ash St. will be reduced from three lanes to one lane between Augusta Ave. and Maxwell Ave.

The lane reductions are expected to cause congestion on eastbound Northwest Blvd. and southbound Ash St., so alternative routes are suggested for drivers during peak traffic times. Pedestrians may also experience sidewalk detours, but local access will be maintained.

In addition to using alternative routes, the City suggests altering drive times or utilizing remote work if possible to avoid the heavy traffic volume between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, construction work on Rockwood Blvd. between Grand Blvd. and Cowley St. will require a complete closure of the street from Monday, September 15 to Wednesday, September 17. This section of street is located just south of Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children's Hospital.

The project includes water, sewer, and stormwater systems work as well as rehabilitation of the pavement with a grind and overlay. The intersection at Rockwood Blvd., Cowley St., and 10th Ave will also be redesigned as part of the project which is expected to be completed in mid-October.

During the closure, north/south traffic will open on Rockwood Blvd at the Sumner Ave./10th Ave intersection while Sumner Ave./10th Ave will be closed for east/west through traffic between Grand Blvd. and Sherman St.

Drivers can access healthcare employee parking garage via one lane in each direction on 9th Ave. However, there will be no on-street metered parking available on 9th Ave. between Grand Blvd. and Cowley St., as well as on Rockwood Blvd. between Grand Blvd. and Cowley St.

Pedestrians may also experience sidewalk detours, but local access will be maintained. The City urges drivers to slow down for everyone's safety and make an extra effort to support businesses impacted by this necessary work.
