Spokane: City Closures Planned for the Holidays

~ As the holiday season approaches, the City of Spokane has announced several closures and changes to city services. Erin Hut, the Communications Director for the city, has released a statement detailing the closures and reminding citizens to plan accordingly.

Spokane City Hall will be closed at noon on Wednesdays, December 24th and 31st, as well as all day on Thursday, December 25th, Friday, December 26th, and Thursday, January 1st in observance of Christmas and New Year's Day. This closure includes all city offices and services located within City Hall.

In addition to City Hall closures, there will also be changes to garbage and recycling collection for customers with Thursday and Friday collection days. Due to the holidays falling on these days, collection will be delayed by one day. The Waste-to-Energy facility will also be closed on Thursdays, December 25th and January 1st but will remain open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all other days.

For those looking to dispose of their Christmas trees after the holidays, tree pickup will be available from January 5th to January 16th this year.

Customers with clean green food and yard waste service are reminded that their pick-up dates for January and February fall on the first full weeks of those months. Green carts will be collected from January 5th to January 9th on regularly scheduled garbage days. Residents are asked to have their carts out by 6 a.m.

The Spokane City Council will not hold meetings on Mondays during the holiday season. This includes December 22nd and 29th as well as January 5th. Meetings will resume on Monday, January 12th with an agenda review meeting at 3:30 p.m. followed by a legislative meeting at 6 p.m. These meetings can be viewed live on CityCable5 or streamed on Facebook and the city's website. Citizens who wish to provide testimony on an item on the Council's agenda can sign up online.

On-street parking meters and kiosks will not require payment on Thursdays, December 25th and January 1st. However, it is important to note that all parking rules, including time limits, still apply even when parking is free on holidays. The Spokane Municipal Court and Community Justice Services will also be closed on these days.

For those in need of city services, Spokane 311 employees will have reduced availability during the holiday season. On Wednesdays, December 24th and 31st, they will only be available by phone from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and in person from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. On Friday, December 26th, they will be available during regular hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., both by phone and online. However, they will not be available on Thursdays, December 25th and January 1st. The public can still access Spokane311.org for assistance at any time and messages will be responded to the next business day.

The Development Services Center (DSC) will also have limited availability during the holiday season. On Wednesdays, December 24th and 31st, they will only be available by phone and online from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with no in-person services offered. On Friday, December 26th, they will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but again only by phone and online services will be available. The DSC will not be open at all on Thursdays, December 25th and January 1st.

All Spokane Public Library locations will also have closures for the holidays. They will be closed on Wednesday, December 24th and Thursday, December 25th for Christmas, and on Thursday, January 1st for New Year's Day. On New Year's Eve, Wednesday, December 31st, the library will close at 5 p.m.

For those looking to enjoy the holiday festivities in Riverfront Park, the Numerica Skate Ribbon and Looff Carrousel will be closed on Christmas Day. However, the park will be hosting a family-friendly New Year's Eve Fireworks Celebration starting at 9 p.m. For more information on this event and other holiday hours for Riverfront attractions, visit the city's website.
