South Bend: Demolition of Qualex Building Gets Underway
Rezul News/10733241
April 22, 2026 ~ South Bend, Indiana - The City of South Bend has taken action to address a long-standing issue in the community. The Qualex building, located at 921 Louise Street, has been vacant for over ten years and has recently been deemed a hazard to public health and safety due to its deteriorating condition.
The former photo processing facility, which was once a subsidiary of Kodak, has experienced significant structural damage over time. Portions of the building and roof have collapsed, prompting the city to take action.

After years of neglect from both current and previous owners, the City has determined that demolition is necessary to ensure the safety of its residents. This decision was made under Indiana's Unsafe Building Law and is being carried out through a court order.
The South Bend Redevelopment Commission is funding the $365,000 project as part of their ongoing efforts to address blighted and unsafe properties in the city. Demolition work began earlier this week and is expected to be completed by July 4th.
Once the demolition is finished, the site will be cleared and stabilized, providing an opportunity for future redevelopment. This marks a positive step towards revitalizing the community and creating a safer environment for all residents.
