South Bend: City's Yard Waste Season Starts March 30

March 16, 2026 ~ South Bend, IN - As the spring season approaches, the City of South Bend is gearing up for its annual yard waste program. Beginning on Monday, March 30 and running through the first week of December, residents can take advantage of weekly pickup of yard waste for a fee of $6 per month.

New customers will receive a 48 or 96-gallon yard waste bin and collection will occur on the same day as trash pickup. To sign up for the program, individuals can visit southbendin.gov/yardwaste or call 311. However, residents who already have a yard waste bin and received service last year do not need to sign up again.

In order to ensure that the collected yard waste is properly processed into compost or mulch, residents are asked to only put specific items in their bins. These include grass clippings, leaves or weeds, twigs or prunings, and small branches less than 2 inches in diameter. It is important to note that certain items are not allowed in the yard waste bins such as animal waste, dirt and rocks, food waste, household trash, lumber and large tree limbs, oils and other hazardous waste, as well as plastic bags and recycling.

Contamination in yard waste can cause an entire truckload to be sent to the landfill instead of being processed. To avoid this issue, if contamination is found in a bin a warning will be issued. Continued contamination may result in a fee ranging from $10 to $20 which will appear on the next utility bill.

The collected yard waste is then converted into compost and mulch which is available free of charge for self-loading at an area outside the City's Organic Resources facility located at 4340 Trade Drive. This provides residents with an opportunity to utilize these resources for their own gardening or landscaping needs.

The City of South Bend encourages all residents to participate in this program and help keep their community clean and green. By following the guidelines and properly disposing of yard waste, individuals can contribute to a more sustainable environment for all.
