Six Months After Google Put AI Inside Maps, Many Local Businesses Have Not Caught Up

Rank Local Web Design & SEO urges owners to check how Ask Maps sees them before the holiday rush

AUSTIN, Texas - Rezul -- Six months after Google added a Gemini-powered feature called Ask Maps to Google Maps, many local businesses still have not adjusted to how customers search. Ask Maps lets people ask full questions, like where to find a quiet coffee shop with Wi-Fi and outdoor seating, and get AI recommendations back. With holiday shoppers about to lean on their phones, Rank Local Web Design & SEO is urging owners to see how Google's AI describes them.

Google announced Ask Maps on March 12, 2026, rolling it out in the United States and India on Android and iOS. Google says Maps draws on more than 300 million places and contributions from more than 500 million people. The feature does not replace map listings. It adds a conversation on top of them.

"Google has not published how Ask Maps chooses which businesses to recommend, so anyone promising a guaranteed Ask Maps ranking is guessing," said Mark Cass, founder of Rank Local Web Design & SEO as well as the author of the book "Rank Local: How Businesses Win on Google." (available on Amazon and fine bookstores everywhere). "What we do know is that Google needs clear, accurate facts to work with. If your profile, reviews, and website don't clearly say what you do and who you serve, the AI has nothing to match."

Cass recommends a simple test. Open Google Maps, ask the questions real customers ask, and note which businesses get recommended and how Google describes them. Then check that your own details are correct, that attributes like Wi-Fi, accessibility, and payment options are filled in, and that your reviews reflect real customer experiences. Google has said certain attributes may help a business appear when customers search for those features.
