Racialized Local Elected Officials in B.C. Face Systemic Racism, Harassment and Abuse on the Job

Rezul News/10739225
New report reveals more than 80% of local elected officials reported facing online harassment and nearly 70% of IBPOC local elected officials reported enduring systemic racism while serving in local office.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Rezul -- As B.C.'s municipal election campaigns heat up, a new report highlights the urgent need for improved support and protections for racialized local officials. Along with the report, the Centre for Civic Governance and the Foundation for a Path Forward have launched an online harms toolkit and resources for local leaders.

The first report of a multi-year research project, funded by the Law Foundation of BC, the INSPIRE Pilot Report, follows the journey of racialized local elected officials in British Columbia, from running for office to serving in public life while navigating online harassment, racism, disinformation, exclusion, and limited institutional support.

The Pilot Project report documents these experiences through survey findings, interviews, and community dialogue. The toolkit responds by offering practical guidance for preparation, documentation, response, reporting, recovery, policy change, and peer connection.

"At its core, INSPIRE asks a deeper question", say the report's authors. "What does representation mean if racialized officials are elected into systems that are not yet prepared to protect their safety, recognize their authority, or support their continued public service?"

About the Centre for Civic Governance and the INSPIRE Project

The Centre for Civic Governance (CCG), formerly the Columbia Institute, is a Vancouver-based, Canada-focused public policy think-tank with a mission to grow, foster, and support progressive leadership to advance equitable, inclusive, and resilient communities across Canada. The INSPIRE project  is a collaborative initiative between CCG and the Foundation for a Path Forward (https://foundation4ward.org/). This project, funded by the Law Foundation of British Columbia (https://www.lawfoundationbc.org/)'s Racial Justice Grant, aims to identify ways to better support racialized local elected officials in rural communities across the province.
