Prolific Press Publishes 100 Word Fiction Issue #1, the Journal's Debut Anthology
Rezul News/10743891
Thirty-four writers, forty stories, and one rule held to the letter: each piece runs to exactly one hundred words.
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Rezul -- Prolific Press has published Issue #1 of 100 Word Fiction, the debut print anthology from the independent literary journal, gathering forty stories drawn from its first open reading period.
The 48-page paperback collects work by 34 writers, chosen by hand across a full reading season. Every story is set on a page of its own, and every one of them observes the journal's single rule: one hundred words, no more and no fewer.
"The rule sounds like a gimmick until you try it," said Glenn Lyvers, editor-in-chief of 100 Word Fiction. "A hundred words leaves no room to clear your throat. Everything in this book had to earn its place."
The range inside that limit is the point. A survey team circles a planet and decides how best to clear the sitting tenants off some very desirable real estate. A dog makes off with a pickle. A literary critic who spent his career dismantling the dead wakes to find Death standing at the foot of his bed. On the Firth of Forth, an old ferryman warns a Victorian engineer that seventy men will die before anyone spans that water. A grandfather's remark about a plate of fish and chips is still echoing two decades later.

Issue #1 features stories by Albert N. Katz, Amy Gordon, C. L. Killgore, Carole Mertz, Duane Anderson, Francis Flavin, Isaac Eustice, Jake Aller, Jen Mierisch, Julie A. Dickson, Lianne Kamp, Maggie Nerz Iribarne, Penny Michalski, Richard Dove, Robert Hunt, Sarah Zae Deranleau, Tobi Alfier, Valerie D Staton, Virginia Watts, Fiona M Jones, Craig Kirchner, Taylor Hurst, Tim Gavin, C.W. Bryan, Eric Goldfarb, Robert Baldwin, Suzanne Cottrell, Arvilla Fee, Patti Ross, Katie Richards, E.D. Skitch, Hallie Oakwood, Michael Aleman, and Kevin Gerard Neill.
100 Word Fiction publishes drabbles -- stories of exactly one hundred words -- and reads submissions year-round from writers anywhere. The journal was founded on the idea that a hard constraint is a form of craft rather than a limitation, and that a single page is room enough for a whole world. Every story in the issue can also be read free online.
