NEWARK, N.J. - Rezul -- Newark Yoga Movement (NYM), a nonprofit delivering trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness programming throughout Newark, announces the appointment of Lisa Sorensen as its new Executive Director. A longtime NYM board member, certified yoga instructor, and wellness advocate, Sorensen will lead the organization's next phase of growth, expand community-centered programming while honoring NYM's roots.

Founded in 2009 by Debby Kaminsky, Newark Yoga Movement has served more than 43,000 students, 6,000 educators, and thousands of residents and workers across Newark, bringing accessible wellness practices into schools, parks, community centers, workplaces, correctional facilities, and public spaces.

She later transitioned into wellness, becoming a certified yoga instructor and opening a community-focused yoga studio in Rahway, New Jersey.

"I'm excited to lead Newark Yoga Movement into its next chapter," said Sorensen. "Under the leadership of our founder, Debby Kaminsky, extraordinary work has been done supporting children and the community and remains at the heart of what we do because self-care and emotional awareness learned early shape a lifetime. My own experiences have shown me how critical it is that women are supported and given space to heal, because when women are well, families and communities are stronger. This next chapter allows us to honor Newark Yoga Movement roots while expanding our reach and meeting people exactly where they are, bringing yoga beyond studio walls."

"Lisa has been a valued board member since 2019, and I couldn't be more excited to see her step into the role of Executive Director," said Kaminsky. "Her grounding in wellness, combined with her communications expertise, energy, and strategic vision, will allow Newark Yoga Movement to remain relevant and responsive while continuing to serve the community we love."
