New BTR Report Reveals African Artists Generated 43.1% of 25.8 Million Plays
Rezul News/10741051
First-party analysis of 26,743 tracks and 5,285 artists finds rapid African catalogue growth, threefold year-over-year uploads and broad discovery across independent music.
LOS ANGELES - Rezul -- BeatsToRapOn has released its Mid-Year Independent Music Report, analyzing 26,743 tracks, 5,285 artists and 25.8 million plays recorded from January 14, 2025, through July 22, 2026.
First-party platform data shows artists from African countries generated 43.1% of measured plays and supplied 49% of the country-tagged catalogue. Nigeria and South Africa now hold the second- and third-largest national catalogues behind the United States.
Unlike estimates built from public charts or third-party panels, the report examines aggregated catalogue and engagement records created directly through BeatsToRapOn.
Independent Music Uploads Tripled Year Over Year
Artists uploaded 11,429 dated tracks in the first half of 2026, compared with 3,806 during the same period in 2025. May and June set consecutive platform records with 2,841 and 2,970 uploads. The dated catalogue grew from 10,446 tracks at the end of 2025 to 23,420 by July 22, 2026.

"The headline is 25.8 million plays, but the number that matters most is that 92.7% of published tracks have been heard," said Chetwyn Fitzgerald, founder of BeatsToRapOn. "Independent artists need discovery systems that keep the middle and long tail alive."
Hip-Hop Leads; Instrumentals Work Hardest
Hip-Hop / Rap led with 10.28 million plays across 10,091 tracks. Instrumentals ranked second with 3 million plays across 1,963 tracks and averaged approximately 1,529 plays per track, the highest rate among the leading genres. Afrobeats generated 2.69 million plays, followed by Trap at 2.38 million and R&B & Soul at 2.26 million.
The geographic analysis covered 18,706 country-tagged tracks. The United States led with 6,678 tracks and 8.69 million plays, followed by Nigeria with 4,175 tracks and 4.02 million plays and South Africa with 3,736 tracks and 3.49 million plays. Artists from 117 countries appeared across the full catalogue.

Discovery Reached Beyond the Biggest Hits
The report found that 92.7% of published tracks received at least one play. Among played tracks, the median reached 802 plays and the mean 1,041. The top 10% generated 34.3% of total plays, while the top 1% accounted for only 7.2%.
Platform engagement included 49.3 million views, 2.5 million likes, 4.8 million shares and 634,000 downloads. The browse-to-listen rate was 52.3%.
Plays represent BeatsToRapOn playback events and are not directly equivalent to royalty-qualified streams reported by other services.
