New Book Expands the Legacy of One of Alexandria's Most Influential Black Leaders and a Key Architect of Black Washington, D.C
Rezul News/10728046
Freeman Henry Morris Murray was a pivotal yet overlooked figure in the struggle for Black political power and emancipation.
PRINCETON, W.Va. - Rezul -- Historian and author Anita Hackley Lambert has released a new biography examining the life and legacy of Freeman Henry Morris Murray, an influential but largely overlooked Black intellectual, civil rights strategist, and civic leader whose work shaped early Black political thought in Alexandria, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
Lambert's new book, The Business of Emancipation: From Alexandria to Black Broadway: The Life and Legacy of Freeman Henry Morris Murray, documents Murray's role in early civil rights advocacy and Black intellectual life during the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras. Drawing on archival research and verified genealogy, the book positions Murray as a key figure in shaping Black public engagement and political strategy in the nation's capital.
Murray also played a significant behind-the-scenes role in Black journalism. He served for many years as chief proofreader at the Afro-American Newspaper and contributed editorial work to the Chicago Defender and the Amsterdam News. Despite his influence within these institutions, his intellectual labor was rarely acknowledged, reflecting broader patterns of historical omission affecting Black intellectual workers.

The Business of Emancipation builds on Lambert's established body of nonfiction scholarship, which includes F.H.M. Murray: First Biography of a Forgotten Pioneer for Civil Justice and Echoes of a Voice for Justice: The Story of Barry A. Murray. Together, these works form a multigenerational historical project grounded in primary-source research, documentation, and lineage-based analysis.
Alexandria Public Library previously engaged Lambert's earlier work on Murray through a public interview and YouTube program, marking one of the city's earliest institutional recognitions of his historical significance. Lambert's scholarship integrates historical research, genealogy, and faith-informed reflection, emphasizing the importance of accurate documentation in preserving African American history, particularly in regions such as West Virginia, where Black contributions have often gone unrecorded.
"I create history by recording history, one book at a time," Lambert notes.
