Midwest Microbrew Releases Second Interview With BIT Brewery Owner

Central City, Iowa brewery discusses grassroots marketing, community events and its Midwestern hospitality-driven growth strategy.

CENTRAL CITY, Iowa - Rezul -- Midwest Microbrew today released its second interview with Scott Whitson, head brewer and co-owner of BIT Brewery, exploring how the small-town brewery has grown its brand through community events, social media and organic search visibility over its six years in business.

BIT Brewery, whose name stands for "Best in Three," operates a 2-barrel brewing system in Central City, a town of about 1,285 people, and typically keeps 14 of its own beers on tap. Whitson said the brewery relies on a mix of marketing channels rather than any single strategy. "The different channels hit different audiences," Whitson said. "Sometimes they cross over, but at the end of the day, you're a small business — you want to get your word out."

Among the brewery's most effective tools is its "Bit Membership" program, which invites customers to help brew a custom batch of beer for a nominal fee, then celebrate its release with friends and family. "It gives people a chance to invite their friends and family to kind of celebrate their beer that they helped create," Whitson said, noting the program consistently brings new visitors into the taproom.

The brewery also hosts an annual homebrew competition, now in its tenth year, benefiting the Central City Growth Organization, and runs a 150-member mug club offering discounts and monthly perks.

Whitson said organic Google search traffic — particularly for terms like "breweries near me" and "restaurants near me" — has driven significant business, while a paid sponsorship wrapping local golf carts with the brewery's logo failed to generate measurable results. "I learned that people don't really look at golf carts that much," Whitson said.

The full interview covers BIT Brewery's marketing wins and missteps, its approach to Midwestern hospitality, and how it plans to keep evolving its outreach strategy. Read the full article at https://midwestmicrobrew.com/small-brewery-smart-marketing-the-bit-brewery-story/.
