Mesa Students Invited to Learn About City History
Rezul News/10724433
~ Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Historic Preservation Board and Mesa Historic Preservation Office are inviting local students to delve into their city's rich history through the annual Historical Essay and Visual Arts Contest. This year's theme, "Mesa Through Time: Honoring Our Past, Inspiring Our Future," aligns with the America 250 events organized by Mesa's A250 Committee in celebration of the 250th birthday of the United States.
The contest is open to all students in kindergarten through twelfth grade, including those attending public, private, charter or home school programs. Students of all grade levels can participate in the visual arts contest, while students in grades four through twelve can enter the historical essay competition. This year also introduces a new opportunity for groups of three to six students of any age range to collaborate on a group project instead of individual entries. Registration is currently open and will close on March 24.
Visual arts entries can include video production, sketches, paintings or building a 3D model. Writing entries can take the form of a historical essay or fictional story inspired by Mesa's past. Both contests share three common topics: "Mesa Then & Now," which compares historic landmarks with present-day life; "Preserving the Past," which highlights significant buildings, people or stories that have shaped Mesa; and "Mesa's Role in the American Story," which connects Mesa to broader U.S. history as part of the America 250 celebration.

The group project category challenges students to design a mural or sign for downtown Mesa that embodies the city's history while also capturing its bright future. All entries must reflect original research, critical thinking and creative or writing skills.
There are three options for submitting an entry form and submission: mailing it to City of Mesa Historic Preservation Office Attn: Dawn Dallman at P.O. Box 1466, Mesa AZ 85211-1466; dropping it off at the City of Mesa Historic Preservation Office Attn: Dawn Dallman at 55 N. Center St., Mesa AZ 85201 (Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.); or emailing it to historicpreservation@mesaaz.gov.
Entries sent by mail must be postmarked on or before the contest due date of March 24, 2026. Once submitted, projects become the property of the Mesa Historic Preservation Board and will not be returned.
The essay and visual arts contests will be judged separately, with awards presented by grade group (K-3, 4-6 and 7-12). All participants will receive a certificate of participation. Cash prizes ranging from $25 to $100 will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners in each category for both students and teachers.
