Mesa Opens Cooling Centers to Offer Heat Relief

~ As the city of Mesa continues to experience extreme heat and record-breaking temperatures, local officials have taken action to provide relief for residents. In collaboration with community partners, the city has activated several Cooling Centers to offer a safe and air-conditioned space for individuals to escape the scorching heat.

The Cooling Centers, located at Terros Health (Stapley Health Center - Primary Care), Friends at First (Outreach Center), and A New Leaf (MesaCAN), will be open during specific hours throughout the week. These centers will also provide access to water, an essential resource during times of extreme heat.

The decision to open these Cooling Centers was made in response to the current conditions and the Emergency Heat Warning that is in effect until Sunday, March 22. While the typical heat safety season runs from May through September, officials have taken precautions early due to the severity of the current heatwave.

Mayor Mark Freeman emphasized the importance of providing relief services for vulnerable populations during this time. "The City and our community partners know how critical it is to provide heat relief services to our most vulnerable residents, even when triple-digit temperatures arrive several weeks earlier than normal," he stated. He also urged residents to check on their neighbors, family members, and friends who may be homebound to ensure their safety and well-being.

In addition to the Cooling Centers, Mesa also has five Hydration Stations open year-round where individuals can refill their reusable water bottles. These stations are located at Mesa Arts Center North Studios Building, Mesa Main Library, Mesa Red Mountain Library, Paz de Cristo, and Pioneer Park.

Furthermore, the City of Mesa offers various online resources for heat safety including a webinar produced by the Community Engagement Team featuring experts from Mesa Fire and Medical and Human Services. Residents can also find information on severe weather preparation and limited income assistance programs on their website.

As temperatures continue to rise in Mesa, it is crucial for individuals to take necessary precautions and seek relief at the Cooling Centers or Hydration Stations. The city remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents during this heatwave.
