Mesa Animal Control Reminds Residents to Keep Pets Safe in the Heat
Rezul News/10734950
~ As the summer heat begins to rise in Arizona, the City of Mesa and Mesa Animal Control are urging residents to take precautions to protect their furry companions. With triple digit temperatures on the horizon, it is important for pet owners to be aware of the potential dangers that come with extreme heat.
According to Mesa Animal Control, pets can be affected by the heat in various ways, including dehydration and burns on their skin and paws. Additionally, certain breeds of dogs are at a higher risk of drowning in pools, making it crucial for owners to take extra precautions.
To ensure the safety of pets during hot weather, Mesa Animal Control has provided a list of safety tips for pet owners. These include making sure animals have access to shade and shelter throughout the day, providing an adequate supply of water in a plastic bowl while away from home, and being mindful of walking dogs on hot pavement.
One important reminder from Mesa Animal Control is to never leave pets unattended in a parked car. Even with windows cracked open, temperatures inside a car can increase by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes. This can quickly become life-threatening for animals left inside.

In case of any emergency involving an animal, residents are advised to call 911 immediately. This includes situations where an animal is locked in a vehicle or if there is suspicion of abuse or neglect.
With Fourth of July celebrations approaching, pet owners are also reminded to keep their pets safe during fireworks displays. It is recommended to leave pets at home with the television or radio on to help cover the noise from fireworks. Additionally, make sure pets are wearing identification tags or have a microchip with current information in case they do escape.
Mesa Animal Control Supervisor Miguel Hernandez emphasizes the importance of not leaving pets behind in parked cars during hot weather. "A parked car can become an oven in minutes," he says. "Don't leave pets behind, love them enough to leave them home."
It is important for pet owners to be aware that leaving an animal in a vehicle intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly is considered a class one misdemeanor in Arizona. This can result in up to six months in jail, three years of probation, and a $2,500 fine.
