Mayor Yemi presents Spirit of Colorado Springs Award to Larry Yonker

~ On Friday, March 1, Mayor Yemi Mobolade of Colorado Springs presented the prestigious Mayor's Spirit of Colorado Springs Award to Larry Yonker, a longtime community leader. The award was given during an event commemorating the 30th anniversary of Springs Rescue Mission.
Yonker was recognized for his more than four decades of dedicated service as a nonprofit leader in the region. He has played a crucial role in shaping the city's response to homelessness and expanding services for those in need.
In his statement, Mayor Mobolade praised Yonker for embodying the qualities of courage, empathy, and humility in his leadership. He also acknowledged Yonker's significant contributions to creating a more compassionate and connected community. According to the mayor, Yonker's leadership has paved the way for individuals to move from mere survival to stability and ultimately flourishing.

The Mayor's Spirit of Colorado Springs Award is given to individuals whose service and leadership align with the values of the city and have made a lasting impact on the community. Yonker's tireless efforts have not only transformed Springs Rescue Mission into a nationally recognized model for comprehensive homelessness services but have also extended beyond Colorado Springs through his involvement in various nonprofit organizations and partnerships supporting communities both nationally and globally.
Under Yonker's guidance, Springs Rescue Mission has grown from a single-site shelter into a 15-acre resource campus that provides shelter, addiction recovery programs, job training, and mental health services to hundreds of individuals each night. Even after his retirement, he has remained actively involved in the organization's work.
