Mayor Terry and EVSC Launch Attendance Challenge for Schools in Evansville Promise Neighborhood
Rezul News/10743867
EVANSVILLE, Ind. ~ Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry and the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) have joined forces to launch a new program aimed at improving attendance and academic success for students in the Evansville Promise Neighborhood (EPN). The program, called Mayor Terry's Attendance Challenge, will be a nine-month pilot program beginning on October 1st.
Under this initiative, students with perfect attendance in the previous month will automatically be entered into a monthly lottery. Each drawing will select 37 families who will receive a $300 Housing Stability gift card. These gift cards can be used towards essential household expenses such as utility bills, rent, and groceries.
Mayor Terry believes that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed and that starts with being present in the classroom. She stated, "This attendance challenge helps reduce financial pressures that can create barriers to getting students to school while reinforcing that every day in the classroom matters."

The program is available to all students at six EPN schools: Bosse High School, Delaware Elementary School, Evans School, Glenwood Leadership Academy, Lincoln School, and Lodge Community School. EVSC Superintendent Darla Hoover expressed her appreciation for this partnership with Mayor Terry and the City of Evansville. She believes that attendance is a crucial factor in academic achievement and that every day in the classroom provides students with another opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
Funded by $100,000 in interest earned on the City's American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, this initiative aims to reduce financial barriers to attendance and keep students engaged in their education. By promoting consistent attendance, the program hopes to improve academic outcomes such as grade-level reading while also reducing risk factors associated with juvenile crime.
The Mayor's Attendance Challenge is an excellent example of how collaboration between local government and schools can benefit students' education and well-being. With this pilot program set to begin soon, many are hopeful for its success in promoting regular attendance and academic achievement in the Evansville Promise Neighborhood.
