CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has announced the appointment of Susan Cappello as the new Executive Director of Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC). Cappello, who has been serving as Acting Executive Director since January 2023, brings over 36 years of public service experience to the role.
Having started her career with the City of Chicago in 1990, Cappello has held various leadership positions, including Deputy Director of CACC, Administrative Services Officer, and Human Resources Business Partner. Her extensive experience and dedication to public service have made her a valuable asset to the city.
Mayor Johnson praised Cappello's exceptional leadership and commitment to public service, stating that she has demonstrated these qualities throughout her career. He expressed confidence in her ability to continue advancing the department's mission and serving both the people and animals of Chicago with integrity and compassion.

During her time as Acting Executive Director, Cappello has led CACC through significant achievements and expanded lifesaving initiatives. In 2025, the department recorded its highest number of adoptions in history and the highest number of animals transferred to rescue partners in over a decade. This resulted in a 19% increase in live-saving outcomes compared to the previous year.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to continue serving as Executive Director, Cappello stated that she is proud of the progress made by staff, volunteers, and partners during her tenure. She looks forward to building on this momentum to further strengthen services and lifesaving efforts for Chicago's animals and residents.
Throughout her career at CACC, Cappello has managed budgeting, served as a liaison between City departments and external partners, and provided executive oversight for adoption initiatives, vaccination clinics, microchip clinics, and community outreach programs. She has also worked closely with community organizations and rescue partners to reduce the number of homeless animals entering shelters while increasing positive outcomes for those in care.

Mayor Johnson emphasized that in her new role, Cappello will continue to prioritize public safety, animal welfare, and community partnerships. He credited her leadership as instrumental in helping animals find safe and permanent homes in Chicago.
CACC is the only municipal animal shelter in the city and is responsible for protecting public safety and ensuring humane treatment of animals through sheltering, pet placement, education, and animal law enforcement. The department receives over 40,000 animal-related inquiries and service requests annually through the 311 Call Center and houses approximately 500 animals at any given time. With a staff of approximately 70 members, CACC operates with an annual budget of $8.17 million.
