Madison: Meet Women in Construction 2026 Profile: Karime Grajales-Patton

~ City of Madison Building Inspection Code Enforcement Officer Karime Grajales-Patton is not one to settle for the minimum when it comes to ensuring the safety and maintenance of existing buildings. With a passion for construction and a strong background in the field, Grajales-Patton goes above and beyond in her role to identify any potential hazards or code violations.

Originally from Mexico, Grajales-Patton's love for buildings began at a young age. She pursued her passion through higher education, earning multiple degrees including architecture and a Master's in Science in Construction Management from Tec de Monterrey, as well as a PhD in City, Territory and Sustainability from the University of Guadalajara.

Her professors instilled in her the importance of listening to buildings, as they have their own language that must be understood. This lesson has stayed with Grajales-Patton throughout her career and has helped her excel as an inspector.

But Grajales-Patton's expertise goes beyond just construction. She is also fluent in three languages: Spanish, Italian, and English. This has allowed her to connect different worlds within the industry and bridge any language barriers that may exist between contractors or property owners who do not speak English as their first language.

In addition to her role as an inspector, Grajales-Patton has also worked as a college professor for the School of Architecture and has done consulting work related to codes and regulations for people with disabilities. She has even conducted research on accessibility in various countries such as Europe and Mexico.

As a woman in construction, Grajales-Patton acknowledges that there have been challenges but she sees them as opportunities for growth. She believes that there are many opportunities for women within the built environment beyond just working on construction sites. From planning and urban design to IT systems and code enforcement, Grajales-Patton encourages women to explore all aspects of the industry.

Her dedication to her work and her ability to connect different cultures and languages has not gone unnoticed.
