Longtime Camp Runoia Director Alex Jackson Announces Departure After More Than Three Decades
Rezul News/10743297
AUGUSTA, Maine - Rezul -- Alex Jackson, a respected camp professional who spent more than three decades at Camp Runoia in Belgrade, Maine, has resigned from her position as Director, effective August 13, 2026.
Alex first joined Camp Runoia in 1995 as a cultural exchange counselor and went on to serve in numerous leadership roles, including more than a decade as Co-Director. She became Director in 2022, leading one of Maine's oldest continuously operating summer camps for girls through a period of transition and growth after it changed from a family-owned business to private equity fund ownership.
"Being part of the Runoia community has been one of the great privileges of my life," Alex said. "I am profoundly grateful for the generations of campers, families, staff and alumnae who trusted me, challenged me to be better and made my work so full of joy."
Throughout her time at Runoia, Alex helped preserve and strengthen Runoia's distinctive culture while overseeing the complex year-round and seasonal work required to operate a residential camp. Her leadership encompassed camper care, staff recruitment and development, program design, family communication, safety and accreditation, financial and operational planning, and the stewardship of longstanding traditions.

Alex is known within the camp community for combining deep institutional knowledge and experience with building strong relationships, pragmatism and an unwavering focus on children. She has also contributed to the wider camping profession, including service on the Maine Summer Camps Board of Directors, Maine Trip Leaders Committee, American Camp Association New England, and supporting American Camp Association standards and accreditation.
Alex will now bring her experience to a broader range of camps and organizations. She plans to offer consulting and leadership support in areas including camp operations, staff culture and development, program quality, and accreditation readiness. She is also open to conversations about the right long-term camp leadership opportunity in a family-owned or not-for-profit board run camp.
"I remain deeply committed to the power of camp," Alex said. "At its best, camp helps young people discover who they are, gives staff the opportunity to become capable and compassionate leaders, and creates communities in which people feel like individuals who are known and valued as they are. I am excited to bring everything I have learned to new organizations, challenges and the next generation of camp leaders."
