A Letter From the Tacoma City Council to the Sound Transit Board
Rezul News/10731417
~ As Sound Transit faces a $34.5 billion funding gap, the city of Tacoma and Pierce County are urging the agency to prioritize transit investments in their region. In a joint statement, community leaders emphasized the importance of not delaying projects that would disproportionately impact the South Sound.
The city of Tacoma, home to one of the fastest-growing cities in Washington state and the second-largest county by population, plays a vital role in supporting the regional workforce and economy. However, increasing congestion on major highways has hindered mobility and limited economic opportunities for residents and workers alike.
Recognizing the seriousness of Sound Transit's financial challenges, community leaders appreciate the agency's efforts to identify cost savings and efficiencies through their Enterprise Initiative. However, they stress that investments must reflect a truly regional vision and not come at the expense of communities eagerly awaiting connection to the transit network.

One project that has been delayed for five years is the Tacoma Dome Link Extension, which is now scheduled for completion in 2035. The extension will not only serve as a terminus but also as a primary multimodal hub connecting light rail with regional and local transit options. The city has already rezoned areas around the future station in anticipation of its arrival, with private investments already pouring in.
The city also emphasizes the importance of collaboration with the Puyallup Tribe of Indians in delivering this project. They believe that ongoing partnership and meaningful engagement will be crucial in honoring Tribal priorities and strengthening relationships within the community.
While acknowledging that difficult decisions lie ahead for Sound Transit, community leaders stress that investments of this magnitude should not be deferred if it means undermining long-term regional mobility or disproportionately impacting their region. They urge Sound Transit to keep their commitments to Pierce County at the forefront when making decisions about ST3 projects.
In conclusion, community leaders thank Sound Transit for their leadership and urge them to consider prioritizing transit investments in Tacoma and Pierce County as they work towards addressing their financial challenges and advancing the ST3 program. The future of the region depends on a transit system that serves them fully, and they are ready to see these projects come to fruition.
