Visible Multiple Myeloma Patient Advocates Make Noise Discussing Topics We All Want to Know... Welcome, a Podcast.
NEW YORK - Rezul -- The idea to bring strong but young voices to explain the complexities of this silent disease multiple myeloma is the goal of these visible Patient Leaders. Kenny Capps and Yolanda Brunson-Sarrabo are both powerful patient advocates in their own right.
The two met in 2018 and connected on their disease and with their age. Multiple Myeloma is a bone marrow cancer that affects the blood and bones. The cancer is treatable though can involve a harsh treatment process. It has also been evident that African Americans are twice as likely to be diagnosed and run the risk of developing multiple myeloma when compared to White Americans; they are also more likely to be diagnosed at a younger age. African Americans, on average, are diagnosed around 66 years old, while White Americans are diagnosed around age 70. The statistics alone was an area the two wanted to explore further. Celebrities and entertainers have also been tossed the hand of MM Actor Peter Boyle, Politician Geraldine Ferrero, and Rapper Guru from Guru and DJ Premier a popular hip hop group in the eighties and nineties all succumbed to the illness.

Yolanda is the President/ Certified CPT Trainer of Chronic Fitness a fitness boutique service for clients with limited abilities. Kenny JD, PT, is a Writer, Speaker, Fitness Coach and the Executive Director of Throwing Bones Foundation, whose mission is to encourage blood cancer patients to be active and healthy through treatment. Kenny's condition is stable. The pair have come together to give a face and voice for issues many facing myeloma have not found. Though the disease shows the face of an older generation, multiple myeloma also affects younger patients under 60 and various ethnicities. The team wanted to discuss issues that the full spectrum of patients could appreciate.
The much-needed arena titled The Myeloma Team hosted by Yolanda and Kenny will address topics that will include staying fit with medications, mental health, emotional support and dealing with pain management. The team will also conduct interviews with fellow patients, as well as doctors and researchers who are experienced in the area.
