KC Water celebrates "Kansas City Wetlands Day" as the department works to preserve important ecosystem

~ Kansas City, Missouri - When one thinks of Kansas City, wetlands may not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, KC Water is making strides to change that perception by taking on a new project to categorize and preserve the thousands of acres of natural wetlands in the city.

Partnering with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), KC Water staff will be digitizing and updating current wetland records, some of which date back to the 1980s. This effort makes Kansas City the first community in Missouri to undertake such a large-scale wetland mapping project. By doing so, they are filling critical gaps in federal resource maps and allowing for more thoughtful planning for the future.

The city's wetlands are home to over 300 plant species and a diverse array of fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and insects. To raise awareness about these important natural resources, KC Water has declared February 2nd as Kansas City Wetlands Day. The City Council officially recognized this declaration on Thursday, January 29th.
