Kansas: KC Water works to improve mapping of local wetlands, aid in conservation
Rezul News/10722528
~ Kansas City, MO - In a continued effort to protect its natural resources and improve the quality of its environment, Kansas City Water (KC Water) has received a Regional Wetland Program Development Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The grant, awarded in 2024, will support KC Water's project to update the National Wetland Inventory (NWI) for the localized level of watersheds in Kansas City.
The existing NWI for Kansas City was created in the 1980s and is now outdated. KC Water's current research aims to establish comprehensive and up-to-date data on the city's wetland resources. This data will serve as a foundation for long-term conservation, protection, and restoration efforts. The project also aligns with the 2023-2028 Missouri Wetland Program Plan.
As part of this project, KC Water will periodically share information from various sources to raise public awareness about the importance of wetlands and encourage practical actions to protect them. Wetlands are crucial habitats for a diverse range of bird species, making them an ideal location for birdwatching.

In May 2026, Missouri will host its 2nd Missouri Birding Challenge, with details to be announced in the coming months. The state's interactive map of birding trails includes several locations in the Kansas City region. These trails offer opportunities to spot various bird species, including those that depend on wetlands.
The Green Heron, a wetland-dependent species, will be featured on this year's Missouri Birding Challenge T-shirt. The public is invited to provide input on the design through a Facebook poll hosted by Missouri Conservation at https://www.facebook.com/moconservation/posts/-....
KC Water's efforts to update the NWI and promote public awareness of wetlands align with the city's commitment to protecting its natural resources and ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. With the support of the EPA grant, Kansas City is taking important steps towards preserving its wetland resources for future generations.
