Juneau: Mendenhall River Community School Students Relocated to Thunder Mountain Middle School on January 8
Rezul News/10724588
~ Juneau, Alaska - Students and staff at Mendenhall River Community School (MRCS) were relocated to Thunder Mountain Middle School (TMMS) today as a precautionary measure due to concerns about the snow load on the gymnasium roof. The decision was made after engineers conducted a walk-through of the building this morning.
According to a statement from the Juneau School District, the building was initially cleared for occupancy and roof shoveling was scheduled to begin tomorrow. However, during a second inspection, it was discovered that the gymnasium's roof is constructed differently than the rest of the school building, raising concerns about its ability to withstand heavy snow.

Out of an abundance of caution, it was recommended that all students and staff be relocated to TMMS. The district assures parents that all students and staff are safe. Parents can find more information and pick up instructions on the district's website.
Meanwhile, the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is also assessing snow loads on all municipal facilities. Additional resources have been brought in to assist with this work. Updates on CBJ's snow recovery efforts can be found on their website or Facebook page.
For media inquiries regarding the school relocation, please contact [insert contact information]. The district urges everyone to stay informed and follow any safety precautions during this ongoing winter weather situation.
