~ Juneau, Alaska - The potential for avalanches in all known slide paths remains high and very likely to increase in the next 24 hours, according to the latest update from the CBJ Avalanche Advisory. This update, released at 5:37 p.m. on January 8, warns of increased snowfall, warmer temperatures, and the potential for several inches of rain at high elevations.

The CBJ Avalanche Advisor has urged residents to stay informed about current avalanche hazards and snowpack conditions by visiting juneau.org/emergency/avalanche-information. While this is not an evacuation advisory, the city is closely monitoring conditions and may issue one in the near future. In the event of an evacuation advisory, an emergency alert will be sent out.

To prepare for potential emergencies, CBJ has prepositioned resources including sheltering at Centennial Hall and additional response resources if needed. As a precautionary measure, Alaska DOT&PF will close Thane Road at the avalanche gates on Friday, January 9 at 12 p.m. due to high avalanche hazard to the roadway. This closure will be re-evaluated on Saturday morning at 8 a.m., but residents should be prepared for extended road closures.
